1 Day Bagamoyo
Mikumi National Park
Bagamoyo is the nearest tourist historical site from Dar es Salaam. It takes approximately 2 hours’ drive. Explore Bagamoyo to experience German colonial administrative building which is still standing. Bagamoyo has gained reputation over years and recognized by UNESCO as World heritage.
During colonial era, Bagamoyo was one of the most important trading ports on the entire East African coast. It was the route de tour for slaves and ivory to be shipped to Zanzibar by dhow.
There are so many interesting places to visit in Bagamoyo, some of them are:
- Kaole ruins tour.

- Caravan Serai museum
- The Catholic old church museum

Detailed Itinerary
The trip starts at your hotel in Dar es Salaam. The journey from Dar to Bagamoyo takes approximately 2 hours.
- Excursion will begin at Kaole ruins. Where evidences of colonial era will be seen, for example, remains of mosque, which was built 13 centuries ago, tombs, graves and small museum displaying artifacts. Kaole ruins shows evidence of Arabs settlements.
- From Kaole ruins, the guide will take you to old fort. Which is believed to be the oldest building in Bagamoyo, built in 1860. Initially, it was used as slave hold, later transformed to military camp. Old fort is located just 100 meters from the ocean shore.
- Crocodile farm is another point of attraction. The farm is developed to produce reptiles for selling and as showcasing to visitors.
- Catholic Church is the first land mark in Bagamoyo, and it was one of its kinds in East Africa. Built 1800. Closer to the church, there is memorial tower dedicated to David Livingston (The Missionary)
- After Catholic Church we will head to Caravan Serai, where you will learn history and culture on slave trade and much more on slavery era.
- Finally, we will visit, German old Boma. This was German Administrative Head quarter. You will see two streets of German era style that are still in use. The buildings are closer to the ocean shore.
- During our trip, we will have short lunch break at hotel or Restaurant.
